PERSONAL HEROES

Many of us have someone who has made a significant difference in our lives, a personal hero. Each year our school chooses a common theme to unify our studies. This year it is StoryCorps. For us, Nov. 23 will begin an exciting community outreach project. Over the holiday, students and staff reconnect with extended family; in person, via email and phone - grandparents, siblings, and returning military. Family members are often revered for personal, cultural and emotional reasons, their stories resonating deeply. With this in mind, we will each talk with someone whom we consider a Personal Hero. If they are no longer living, we can speak with someone close enough to them to give a firsthand account. Once the stories are collected, inspiration will result in artistic expression (animation, dramatization, visual art, poetry, songs of tribute…) and presented publically (gallery exhibit, concert, film showing…) providing the greater community an opportunity to celebrate their legacy with us.

Who will you interview?

Our school is a grade 6 through 12 public arts magnet school, made up of 580 students and 40 staff, in a fairly small community in SW Washington State. Students and staff will choose their own personal hero to interview for this project.

Im an 8th grader at VSAA and I think this is a pretty cool project to be doing. I will be interviewing my mother because she is my role model. She has wanted to give up on life so many times but she knows that we need her and I just wanna learn more about everything she does. Please vote for VSAA! (: xoxo

Winning the StoryKit rental would be a great opportunity for our school (I'm a seventh grader). When we did our summer asignment, we were supposed to interview someone. But sharing stories is actually a really good bonding activity and a great thing to participate in. It didn't even feel like a project (At least for me.) Now I'm a fan of StoryCorps! Please vote for us!!

I'm a sophomore at the Vanscouver School of Arts and Academics, and I think that this is a very cool idea. It's a great way for everyone to get connected and to learn more about each other. We are fairly divided at the school, despite all of our best efforts, and I think that it's a great way to make the gap a little smaller!

H! I'm a 6th grader at VSAA and think this project is pretty EPIC!!! I'm going to interveiw my cousin who also went to VSAA and hurt his back in a car accident. He is super cool and I will be seeing during thanksgiving (which is when I plan to interveiw him) So vote for VSAA!!!!!(as in right now)

I am a sixth grader a vsaa and am loving this school. I am so greatful to be apart of this expereince. I will be interviewing my father because he is going bach to school at 38 to get a beter job to support are family. He is a great guy always nice to everyone he meets. Please vote to give are school the experenince of a life time. :)

Hi! I am a seventh grader at VSAA, and I am really excited for this project! I am going to interview my brother who is twenty years old and who I have always looked up to my whole life. Right now he is in Ukraine and will be there for two years (only five months to go!) I am excited to hear him share some of the amazing things he has done in his time there!

I am also a student at VSAA, eighth grade, and I think this is a great idea. I'm going to interview my Great Uncle Rodger(62). I'm going to interview him because I think he made some good decisions in his life and has plenty to tell, a previous story he told me about was him in college and he bought and sold sports cars to pay throughout college and was arrested and released after the police found out they got the wrong guy. Plenty more stories, can't wait to ask!

I'm a student and I can tell you that my whole humanities class is very excited for this project. My plan is to interview my great-grandmother who is 93 years old. She loves to tell stories of her husband who I never had the chance to meet. She traveled all over the country with him while he was in the military and has many stories. Really appreciate the votes from everyone. Go VSAA!

I love VSAA and this is one of my favorite themes so far. We all have stories to tell but in this busy world we don't share them often enough. We can learn so much from our family, friends and colleagues. We are excited about this opportunity to share stories and share art.

VSAA alumni we would love for you to join us! Just choose that unique person in your life you admire deeply, interview them over the holiday break, then come visit us or send us a transcript of the interview so we can archive it...(Sara, you might write a song in tribute to share their legacy:)
